  Nursing & Residential Homes

Nursing homes in England and Wales for caring for the elderly

Nursing home strictly refers to a residential care home that have full-time qualified nursing staff. The term ‘nursing home’ can easily be misunderstood; confused with care for the elderly or care for someone with mental health needs. Typically, this level or nursing is not required in a care home. Caring UK have two care homes one in Greater Manchester, in the Village of Hale called the Cedars Residential care home. The other is based in North Wales in the Village of Brymbo called the Pen-Y-Garth residential care home. Both are Residential homes and EMI residential homes but neither require the need of full time nursing staff.

Both residential care homes have facilities and care home staff that look after their residents 24 hours a day. If there is a need for qualified medical staff, in the majority of cases this need is met by the local district nurse or by residents local GP’s. In most cases the care required by an individual is taken care of by the care home staff who are trained to the required governmental NVQ standard. There is a wide-ranging amount of care that all staff have to undertake to work at Caring UK and staff are trained as a matter of routine as part of their professional development. This includes:
    • Fire Safety
    • Moving and Handling people
    • First Aid
    • Food And Hygiene
    • Infection Control
    • Health And Safety
    • Mental Health Safe Guarding
    • Deprivation of Liberties
    • Adult abuse awareness

Staff although not qualified nurses are trained to be able to handle the drugs that are prescribed on an individual basis by their local doctor. They are also fully trained to manage and care for people with mental health conditions, known as EMI (elderly mentally infirm) care for the elderly. This gives the care home manager all the flexibility they need and required to fully look after individuals without the need to have qualified nurses and become a ‘nursing home’ in the true sense of the word, which is why we denote Caring UK’s homes as residential care homes.
